Rising input costs and volatile commodity prices continue to challenge farm profitability. When crop prices are low, producers need to look for ways to add value to what they grow rather than simply selling raw commodities and purchasing processed feed ingredients later.<\/p>\n

An\u00a0economic analysis<\/a>\u00a0from the University of Arkansas last year showed U.S. farm losses of $240\/acre for corn, $144\/acre for soybeans, and $380\/acre for rice. And right now, more than ever, farmers need to pivot and focus on how to add value to their business. On-farm ingredient processing allows farmers an opportunity to make their own ingredients while avoiding losses from selling their crops and buying those processed ingredients \u2013 typically at higher prices for a loss \u2013 back to feed their animals.<\/p>\n

High-shear dry extrusion (HSDE), was built on the foundation of on-farm processing and has traditionally been used to produce high-quality soybean ingredients. However, its capabilities continue to extend well beyond soybeans.<\/p>\n

Can High-Shear Dry Extrusion Process Ingredients Other Than Soybeans?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. Continued research and development has demonstrated that HSDE can process a wide range of grains, oilseeds, blends, and stabilized ingredients.<\/p>\n

Depending on the application, HSDE can improve digestibility, increase dry matter availability, and help extend shelf life. Processing conditions can also be adjusted according to the raw material and desired finished product.<\/p>\n

Examples include whole grains such as corn and wheat, blended ingredients such as corn-soy and flax-corn or wheat combinations, and stabilized ingredients such as rice bran, full-fat cottonseed meal, and tomato pomace.<\/p>\n

Can High-Shear Dry Extrusion Stabilize Rice Bran?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rice bran is particularly well suited for stabilization through extrusion<\/a>. Fresh rice bran can deteriorate quickly because naturally occurring enzymes promote rancidity.<\/p>\n

Processing rice bran immediately after separation can help stabilize the ingredient and extend its usable shelf life. In one Insta-Pro application, extruded rice bran maintained free fatty acid levels below 5% for at least eight months.<\/p>\n

Which Oilseeds Can Be Processed With the ExPress\u00ae Process?<\/strong><\/p>\n

HSDE can also be paired with mechanical oil extraction to process a variety of oilseeds through the ExPress\u00ae process.<\/p>\n

Common applications include cottonseed, canola or rapeseed, sunflower, and flaxseed or linseed. Depending on the oil content of the seed, a single or double mechanical press can be used. The process produces two valuable products: a partially defatted meal or cake and crude oil.<\/p>\n

Research suggests they can. A University of Manitoba study<\/a> comparing ExPress\u00ae canola meal with solvent-extracted canola meal found greater standardized ileal digestible amino acids and apparent metabolizable energy in the ExPress\u00ae product.<\/p>\n

These results suggest mechanically processed canola can provide broilers with valuable protein and energy. As with any feed ingredient, nutritional value should be determined through ingredient analysis and considered within the complete diet.<\/p>\n
